• Take five steps each fall to help ensure a healthy lawn in the spring: aerate, weed, spot seed, fertilize and rake.

• As thatch (interwoven grass) builds up, water and nutrients can't reach the roots and the soil can become compacted. Deal with the thatch with a dethatching machine and aerate your soil to relieve compaction. 

• Tackle weeds in the fall just before they go into winter dormancy. 

• Damaged areas of your lawn can be rejuvenated by spot seeding. The warm soil from summer combined with the cool temperatures of fall offer ideal sprouting conditions.

• Since most of these jobs come around once a year and the big equipment can be expensive to purchase. It's more economical to rent.
